WORLD DAY TO COMBAT DEDERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT
June 17
he World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed on 17th June of every year. Its purpose is to raise awareness of these issues, highlighting methods of preventing desertification and recovering from drought. The theme for 2024 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is “our land, our future” which echoes a resounding call to action, emphasizing the inseparable link between our land and our collective future. As we confront the escalating threats of desertification and drought, it’s evident that the fate of our planet hinges on our ability to safeguard and restore our precious land resources. Desertification and drought, exacerbated by climate change and unsustainable practices, poses grave challenges to ecosystems, economies, and societies worldwide; from degraded soils to dwindling water sources, the impacts of these phenomena are far-reaching, threatening food security, increasing poverty, and driving displacement.
Yet, amidst these challenges lies an opportunity to reshape our relationship with the land and forge a more sustainable future. Addressing the root causes of desertification and drought requires
a concerted effort at the global level, collaborative initiatives, partnerships, and resource mobilization are essential to scale up sustainable land management practices, promote climate resilience, and ensure equitable access to land and water resources for all.
Embracing holistic approaches to land management, rooted in ecological restoration and community engagement, we can reclaim degraded landscapes, regenerate ecosystems, and strengthen
resilience against the impacts of desertification and drought. Moreover, empowering local communities, particularly those mostly vulnerable to the effects of land degradation is important in this endeavor. Also, by investing in education, technology, and sustainable livelihoods, we can unlock the potential of communities to become stewards of their land and safeguarding it for future generations.
