WORLD OCEAN DAY

June 8

World Oceans Day is celebrated yearly on June 8 to raise awareness of the plight of the oceans and the marine ecosystems they contain. In 1992, in Rio de Janeiro the Canadian delegation
attending the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development first proposed the idea of a day to honour the oceans while in 2002, two conservation organizations, the World
Ocean Network and The Ocean Project, first celebrated the day along with their network of zoos, aquariums, and environmental groups around the world. After a petitioning drive guided in large part by those two organizations, the General Assembly of the United Nations formally designated World Oceans Day in 2008.

The theme “Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate” is to grow the movement through transformative collaboration and the aim is to create not only a healthy blue planet, but also a more just, equitable and sustainable society

Why do we need World Oceans Day?

  • Our ocean covers 70% of the planet and supports life as we know it
  •  Every second breath we take comes from the ocean
  • Our ocean feeds billions of people
  • Our ocean hosts 80% of the world’s biodiversity

Similarly, Mr Akanbi Williams, Director, International Ocean Institute (IOI) in Nigeria, says Nigeria is promoting education, training and research to enhance the peaceful use of ocean space.
According to him, IOI- Nigeria has been promoting current issues in ocean governance including Blue Economy, Ocean Acidification, Climate Change, Food Security and Sustainable Trade, among others.

Promoting food security and maintaining climate change is more of our duties as an NGO
