International day of forests
March 21, 2024
International day of forests is always celebrated on 21st March every year, this year’s celebration focuses on “Forest and Innovation” as stated by the Collaborative Partnerships on Forests (CPF). The vision of the CPF is that “by 2030 all types of forests and forest landscapes are sustainably managed, their multiple values are fully recognized, the potential of forests and their goods and services is fully unlocked, and the Global Forest Goals, the Sustainable Development Goals and other global forest-related goals, targets and commitments are achieved.”
As humans, forests are forever beneficial to us, the oozing calmness boosts our mental well being and physical health, provides us with sufficient oxygen and purifies clean waters for communities. Globally forests make available food to all, aids wildlife conservation and habitats, lessen risk of natural disasters and mitigate climate change.
One of our outstanding programs at EERC is in Natural Resource Management to which we support government and other stakeholders through quality research and project implementation on protection and sustainable management of national and regional natural resources towards realization of UN Sustainable Development Goals. Forests are lifelong assets in tackling climate change which makes it essential for their conservation. In forestry there is a need for innovative technologies in obtaining planting materials for creating forest plantations of fast growing species, innovations in increasing forest functions with benefits for rural areas and innovations in avoiding biodiversity losses. This births our call to action this year for the forests.
“A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people”
“Plant a tree today, Enjoy a Forest tomorrow”
