WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and it is celebrated by millions of people across the world. It is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5th of June since 1973 to raise awareness and encourage action on the protection of the environment. It was established by the United Nations in 1972 and has become a platform for promoting environmental action and sustainability.

This day is celebrated for raising awareness about the environment; it aims to prevent damage to the environment through human activities, it serves as a reminder for taking different steps and adopting various ways to safeguard the environment and help protect our health Globally, more than 400 million tone of plastics are produced every year, half of which is designed to be used only once, discarded instead of being recycled and this increases the occurrence of plastic pollution.

World Environment Day is dedicated to reflecting on our individual and collective impacts on the environment, taking actions to reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainable living. It is very beneficial in reducing pollution, preventing the scarcity of nonrenewable resources, it teaches people different steps they can adopt such as; recycling plastics, planting more trees, preserving water, and protecting our wildlife.

Over 143 countries participate to ensure that the world is a greener and cleaner place; various Organizations including EERC come together on this day to take steps to enhance our future. For instance, Schools encourages students to plant more trees and keep their surroundings clean and workplaces encourage the use of solar system as a source of renewable energy. It helps to increase awareness of the problem our environment faces and what can be done to combat them. EERC has hosted various programs and projects which help in fostering Environmental Sustainability such as Climate Smart Agriculture.

The United Nations calls World Environment Day “the biggest day for positive environmental actions”. It is a day for public outreach as well as personal responsibility and an opportunity to care for the Earth. It is a day to unite with people around the world and take action to protect and preserve the earth. World Environment Day is celebrated to remind people to save nature and the earth by stopping their non-environmentally friendly activities and we should be able to celebrate and promote eco-friendly development in our country in order to save the environment for better future.
