WORLD METEOROLOGICAL DAY THEME: ON THE FRONT LINES OF CLIMATE ACTION
March 23, 2024

Climate change is a real and undeniable threat to our entire civilization. The effects are already visible and will be catastrophic unless we act now. World Meteorological Day marks the entry into force of the Convention establishing the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on 23rd of March 1950. It showcases the essential contribution of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services to the safety and wellbeing of society.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) came into existence by an Act of the National Assembly – NIMET (Establishment) ACT 2003, enacted on 21st May 2003, and became effective on 19th June 2003 following Presidential assent. The agency is mandated to observe, analyze timely and accurately report weather and climate information for all aspects of socio-economic development and the safety of lives and property which includes health. The Federal Government on February 20th, 2024, released the annual Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), which offers diverse sectors climate and weather data to members of the public and various sectors of the economy including aviation, agriculture, construction, water resource management and healthcare.
Environmental and Economic Resources Centre celebrate and work on climate changes and agriculture production for the benefit and sustainability of the society and generations. EERC joins WMO and its members to promote the awareness of the value of weather and climate preservation. The efforts of the WMO and its member nationwide to improve these services have been significantly aided by Meteorological Day.
In addition to encouraging international cooperation and collaboration to address the challenges related to weather and climate, the day has helped to improve the general public’s understanding of meteorology and weather forecasting. And this serves as an inspiration for upcoming generations of weather enthusiasts and meteorologists.
