INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE TROPICS
June 29, 2024

The lack of an annual theme stems from the fact that the International Day of the Tropics celebrates the diversity of the tropical region. This day is set aside, according to the UN, to increase public awareness of the unique difficulties that tropical regions encounter. The tropics is made up of the ecosystem; it faces numerous challenges such as climate change, deforestation, urbanisation, demographic changes, emerging and persistent disease, rising prevalence of Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).
“The Geographical (2023) states that the tropic encompasses 36% of the Earth’s surface area, and 40% of the world’s population lives in these regions, which include portions of Asia, Australia, Africa, South America, and North America. Africa would have doubled its population by 2050, with 1.8 billion more kids born there between now and then. This region is experiencing the highest rates of growth and Nigeria will have a larger population than the United States.”
The Global society is becoming more aware of the social, environmental, and economic effects of climate change, and there is a growing concern among nations in the Tropics and beyond. Studies conducted on several indicators indicate that the impact of rising greenhouse gas emissions will be greater on tropical communities, habitats, and biota than on mid-latitude ones. It is crucial to provide sufficient protection for our tropics by encouraging aforestation, preserving biodiversity, decarbonizing our atmosphere, and protecting our water bodies in order to lower these greenhouse gas emissions.
We at EERC are well-positioned to preserve and undertake significant projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Nigeria attributable to one of our research programs on Agricultural and Environmental Management.
‘THE DIVERSITY OF THE TROPICS IS AS BEAUTIFUL AS PARADISE, PROTECT THE TROPICS!’
