WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY

June 7, 2024

World Food Safety Day is observed annually on the 7th of June.

The United Nations declared the observance in 2018 and it is jointly facilitated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) World Food Safety Day aims to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage food borne risks contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development. It serves as an opportunity to advocate for improved food handling, storage and preparation practices, as well as to enjoy collaboration among government, organization and individuals in safeguarding the global food supply chain.

According to United Nation, Unsafe food poses a threat to human health and economy, with an estimated 600 million cases of food borne diseases yearly. Vulnerable and marginalized groups, including women, children, and people affected by war, are disproportionately affected.

An estimated 420,000 people worldwide pass away each year from food borne illnesses, with children under the age of five accounting for 125,000 of these deaths. This International Day offers a chance to step up efforts to guarantee the safety of the food we eat, bring food safety to the forefront of public policy, and lessen the prevalence of food-borne illnesses around the world.

The theme of the World Food Safety Day 2024 aims to bring attention to unexpected crises that can threaten food safety like power outrages, natural disasters, food borne illness outbreaks caused by imported products and other situations. The theme also underlines the importance of being prepared for food safety incidents, no matter how mild or severe they can be.

EERC as an organization focuses on achieving agricultural productivity, food security and sustainable livelihood.
